So here’s everything you need to know about puppy school. Right from the ‘whys’ to the 'whens’ to the ‘hows’.
Is puppy school worth it?
In short: absolutely. The benefits of puppy school are extensive. It’s more than training – it's an investment in your dog’s future.
There are many resources available online about training your dog. But nothing compares to the hands-on guidance experience of a professional who can provide tailored strategies and tips for your dog’s needs.
From early socialisation to mental stimulation to basic obedience, puppy school helps your dog become a well-adjusted and confident companion. And you, a calm and capable owner.
In just five weeks, you’ll see progress in your puppy’s behaviour and confidence, setting the foundation for a lifetime of positive experiences.
When should my dog start puppy school?
The ideal time to enrol your puppy in training is during their ‘critical socialisation period’, which typically occurs between 3 and 16 weeks. This is a vital window in your puppy’s development, when they’re most open to new experiences, making it the perfect time to introduce them to a variety of environments, people, animals and sounds.
Starting puppy school as early as 8 weeks ensures your dog can build confidence and learn essential skills in a safe, controlled environment.
And the skills your dog learns will shape how they respond to the world around them, laying the foundation for their behavior and interactions throughout their entire life.
At Petstock, we offer three tailored programs for every stage of your puppy’s journey.
- Puppy School: For puppies aged 8 – 15 weeks, in the critical socialisation period, to build their confidence and essential skills right from the get-go.
- Preschool: For dogs 15 weeks and older, who missed Puppy School and want to learn foundational training skills – or simply brush up on the basics!
- Petschool Level 1: For those who have graduated from Puppy School or Preschool, ready to build on their skills and tackle more advanced obedience in a variety of environments.
How does puppy school training work?
Petstock’s puppy training works by using a reward-based training method.
This involves reinforcing positive behaviour with treats and praise, while ignoring any unwanted behaviour.
This approach helps you communicate effectively with your puppy or dog, building trust and strengthening your bond for a lasting, positive relationship.
As a pet parent, you will learn to:
- Address common behavioural problems
- Socialise your dog safely
- Find the appropriate rewards for the best results
- Read canine body language
- Help your dog maintain composure in all situations and environments

If you do, simply let your Puppy School trainer know and they’ll advise you how to work on your skills at home with your dog so you can resume normal classes the following week.
If you miss more than three sessions, we will ask that you re-enrol to complete the full program at another time. No refunds or partial refunds will be given for missing class.
