Steve and Sally

Steve, from the Nelson-Tasman area, has had his life transformed by his guide dog, Sally. She’s given him newfound confidence and has quickly become an integral part of his life. "Sally is keen on Jiu Jitsu, so a daily wrestle is always on the cards," Steve says with a laugh. "She’s not only part of the whānau, but also part of the furniture. So, I’d say she settled in very well and very fast."

Steve's association with Blind Low Vision NZ began 22 years ago after his retinitis pigmentosa diagnosis. "I was in a dark place, heading toward self-destruction. Blind Low Vision NZ gave me hope."

Sally has gifted Steve a new level of confidence and her unconditional love has been life changing. "She’s like a life partner with her own quirks, always by my side, making me feel secure and loved."

Steve praises Guide Dog Mobility Instructor Jade Thurlow for training Sally and making her transition smooth and valuable. He also credits Paul Richardson, his former Orientation & Mobility service provider, for equipping him with essential tools and skills.

Steve highlights the impact of recreational activities with the former national Community Life Enrichment team and says “the experiences I've had with this crew changed my life. Recreational activities with my fellow blindies have been pivotal in how I see myself in this world today."  Steve has also found strong sense of community in blind and para-bowling circles. "The biggest prize for me is the relationships, and Sally is my number one spectator."

Steve's story highlights the transformative impact that donations to Guide Dogs and support from Blind Low Vision NZ can have on individuals' lives.
